Mrs LW, Coventry – MS
In May 2001 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS): by December 2001 primary progressive MS at a rapid rate was the prognosis. Things got quickly worse. The hospital I attended began preparing me and my family for my imminent death within about two years if the rate of decline was maintained. I was provided with a wheelchair and various modifications etc at home.
On diagnosis in May I had started a diet without gluten, dairy, eggs and meat : suggested in some self help books but there was no obvious improvement or even slowing down of the condition's relentless advance.
In January 2002 I heard about the SBL Clinic in the Czech Republic and decided to use an insurance policy to pay for and try out the treatment. I was assessed by Dr. Joe Smarda (biochemistry) and his P&R Labs Team of specialists (immunology) and given a "plan" of dietary supplements. Subsequent food allergy testing in Immunological lab in Germany resulted in my also removing soya from the diet. As I understood it, the basic principle that whatever was lacking in the body would be replaced or given a stimulus made sense. For example, my body wasn't digesting proteins so I was given enzymes to take before every meal. Incidentally, other alternative practitioners have also noticed this about many people with MS.
I was only hoping for slowing or at best halting the onset of further MS symptoms but within 6 months of blood and stool testing in the Czech Republic I had noticed an improvement in my condition. The improvement continued for a further 12 months and has been maintained to date (2005). Fatigue and stamina problems still remain but this is a small thing compared to having been unable to walk unaided, talk coherently, being doubly incontinent and unable to feed myself at times.
I still stick rigidly to the gluten, dairy, egg and soya free diet and have used various exercise regimes including NHS physiotherapy and Pilates, Bowen therapy, Visualization, Magnetic Field Therapy (as endorsed by N.I.C.E.), Cognitive behavioural therapy and positive thought have all combined to contribute to an impossible recovery.
